Nursing gear gets marketed like the right accessory will make feeding easy. It won’t. A workable setup can make it less physically demanding, though, and that’s a much better goal to aim for.

If you want one main pump, make it a real one

Check your insurance before buying. The ACA requires most US plans to cover a breast pump, and you may get this one (or something close) at no cost.

The wearable pump: a supplement, not a starter

The Elvie Stride fits in your bra and lets you pump during a meeting or a grocery run, genuinely useful once your supply is established. In the first weeks, I wouldn’t make one your only pump. Suction is noticeably weaker than a plug-in pump, and establishing supply early on benefits from stronger, more consistent stimulation.

Buy the boring pillow before you need it

It’s cheap enough that “will I actually use this” isn’t really a question. One caveat: it sits directly on a C-section incision line, so if that’s your recovery, plan around regular pillows for the first few weeks instead.

Buy the boring bra before you need it

A full wardrobe of “nursing tops” with built-in flap access before you know your actual feeding routine. Bottle, breast, combo, and pumping schedules all change what you’ll want to wear day to day. A couple of nursing-friendly basics is plenty to start.
